HDR is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to support our expanding civil works section within our Pennsylvania and Ohio offices. This individual will be a member of the multi-disciplinary, PA/OH/WV Water Group team and perform geotechnical engineering for local and national dams, levees, and civil works projects as well as performing geotechnical engineering for other infrastructure projects.

The candidate will have over 10 years of experience in the field of geotechnical engineering analysis and design with a focus on hydraulic structures under USACE and/or FERC geotechnical design criteria. In the role of Geotechnical Engineer you will:

Primary Duties:

  • Work closely with our Dams Levee and Civil Works team to develop scopes of work, budget estimates and implement project analysis work plans.
  • Conduct geotechnical analyses, evaluations and designs; develop design options or recommendations with supporting calculations.
  • Review geotechnical documents and coordinate design with all disciplines.
  • Develop design plans, sections and details as part of multi-disciplinary design teams for civil works projects.
  • Conduct design development and contract document work sessions in conjunction with the Project Manager and other disciplines.
  • Perform engineering assignments that may require critical thinking and creativity to address unique design elements that have limited engineering manual or code-based guidance.
  • Write and edit specifications, select procedures, materials and their respective sizes, and complete necessary calculations for various structure types such as floodwalls, dams, water control structures, hydraulic gates, floodgates, spillways, retaining walls, sheet pile walls, cofferdams, and drainage structures.
  • Independently coordinate the work of the geotechnical design team through the design development and contract document phases of a project.
  • Establish meetings and participate in reviews with various governing agencies for code compliance and comment resolution.
  • Assist with condition assessment for various hydraulic structures (FERC Part 12 experience is a plus)
  • Provide geotechnical engineering services during construction including construction observation, inspections, submittal and RFI reviews, and ITC responses.

Additional Responsibilities/Requirements:

    • The candidate shall have educational and/or work experience in the field of dams, hydraulic structures and large civil works infrastructure for water management and energy production.
    • Knowledge of USACE design and construction procedures and policies, dam safety assurance policy and guidance, and FERC Dam Safety background a plus.
    • Experience with navigation structures is a plus.
    • Knowledge of construction document preparation including drawings, specifications and cost estimates.
    • Construction administration and observation experience is a plus.
    • This individual will be expected to coordinate with the project leads to implement measures to successfully meet all project goals and objectives. Good written and verbal communication skills are expected and required for this position.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
    • Project Management experience a plus.
    • Perform other duties as needed.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

    • BS Civil Engineering or Geotechnical Engineering required. MS Civil Engineering a plus.
    • Ohio and/or Pennsylvania PE, or ability to obtain through reciprocity.
    • 10 years geotechnical design experience required.
    • Proficiency with geotechnical software including gINT, Slope/W, Seep/W, Settle3D (or other settlement software), as well as the ability to develop and execute designs using spreadsheets and MATHCAD, strongly desired.
    • Ability to independently complete and/or coordinate analyses associated with settlement, slope stability and embankment design, foundation design, retaining wall design, lateral deep foundation response, required.
    • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
    • Project Management experience a plus.

The expected compensation range for this position is $ 103,670 - $148,100 annually depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location.
